How much should it cost to replace a fuel pump on a 96 GMC sonoma?

My mechanic is charging me $600 to change the fuel pump on my truck. How bad am I being raped?

You are NOT being raped. GM used a very pricey High Pressure pump that is put inside the Fuel tank. Going price on one of these is 5-700 bucks. It is the same with ALL of the GM trucks of this era. Your mechanic has to drop the fuel tank to change this... which takes time... and the pump alone is over 350 bucks at the Dealer. If money is really tight... U could get a used pump from a Salvage yard and have that installed. However, if it dies you will be right back where you are now! It stinks, but this is going rate for this job... Good Luck!

it should cost u around 50 quid uk money, im a mechanic
Why don't you call around to several garages and get estimates. Then you will know.
depending on how much his hourly rate is you could be in for a bargain,if you want to make it a little cheaper you could buy the pump yourself and ask him to just do the labor ,but make sure that you buy the whole unit with the pump housing and the pump since your,s may be rusty, good luck, delmy d
