My usual mechanic said that it needs to be jacked up so the fuel tank could be removed. He also said that it might cost up to $500 dollars! I hope he was exaggerating.

He wasn't. GM has been putting fuel pumps in the gas tank for a long time. $500.00 is not an unreasonable estimate, and unless you have experience changing out fuel pumps where you have to remove the gas tank I don't recommend it.
