How do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?

I hate taking my car to the mechanic if I can do it myself. Does anyone know of any sites that have step by step instructions. Or is there anything that I should be conscious of before jumping into this. Thanks
How do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?
not a bad job as long as the tank is low or empty. the pump is in the fuel tank. you need a $20.00 fuel line disconect set to take apart the fuel lines. also you will need to be able to get the car up about 2-3' in order to get the tank out.

1) disconnect battery

2) lift vehicle

3) loosen the filler neck and vent to tank

4) disconect wiring

5) 2 bolts hold the straps that hold the tank, loosen, but do not break them they alnmost never come out easy, lw or wd-40 helps alot

6) lower tank

7) where the fuel lines and wires are there is a round collar you remove

to get the pump and sending unit out

8) reverse the order and try starting, it can take a few seconds for the fuel pump to prime, but is done in 30 secs or less usually
How do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?
when it comes to thing like gas.you have to be careful not to ignite it.for example a gas tank strap is so tight you may think of using heat from a torch to loosen it.that's a bad idea!!but i don't think that will be an issue.but you do need to drop the gas tank down and probably out of the car to change the fuel pump.as in its inside the gas tank .sometimes the fuel line requires special tools to remove the fuel lines from the sending unit so you can drop the tank.after that its not that bad to do.as long as you take your time and use common sense.just think safety and you will be fine.good luck.

If it.s only a petrol leak try to silicone it . If the pmp is not working try to 12volt hot wire it first to make sure. Rare that a pump will be faulty.

What the proper way to relieve fuel pressure in a 99 saturn sl2 prior to changing the fuel filter?

I have heard to remove the fuse for the fuel pump and let the car run until it dies because of lack of pressure. I have also heard that i need to release the schrader valve and let it depressurize.. I also know that the saturn fuel filter is extra expensive because it has a built in fuel pressure regulator, but i don't think that will help me in the changing process. help?
What the proper way to relieve fuel pressure in a 99 saturn sl2 prior to changing the fuel filter?
put on eye glasses. and use the schrader valve on top side of engine. good luck with your fuel filter.. and make sure you have the disconnect tool.. it's a a mass of lines that weave in and out of the back side of the engine.

How hard is it to change a fuel pump in a 2003 monte carlo I just recently did one in my blazer.?

Anything additional I should know before I attempt this. Drop the tank put it in put the tank back up. I am doing this for an older friend and the shop wants 700 to do that and she is on a fixed income. Anything I should be aware of before doing this any help would be greatly appreciated

it would be best to buy a repair manual for that car, it will take you step by step. you can get them at most parts stores like autozone
How hard is it to change a fuel pump in a 2003 monte carlo I just recently did one in my blazer.?
I just did this on a mercury villager. It was dream to work on, much unlike my Chevy pickup, which i did some months earlier. The Chevy pickup is much like your blazer. Notes

    1. Have most of the gas out.

    2. Detach the hoses near the tank (I took the door assy out of my pickup, wrong)

    3. Change the fuel filter too

    4. The straps that help one of my gm tanks in was rusted, I had to drill and make threads

    5. Have it high enough up

    6. When you knock the center piece off, make sure you blow it out clean, then use a bass punch to keep from making sparks

    7. Empty the tank entirely out. Last tank I found a lot of water in mine.

    8. Replace fuel lines if you find frayed ones.

    Hope this helps.

What is the easiest way to change a fuel pump in a 2000 chevrolet tahoe?
Drain the gas tank, then remove the straps holding the gas tank to the vehicle from underneath (just make sure you're not under it when you do) Then when you look at the top of the tank, you will see a place where all the wires go inside it- this is your fuel pump and sending unit- take it out, unplug it, and replace it... It sounds easy, but it's actually a lot of work if you don't have a lift...
What is the easiest way to change a fuel pump in a 2000 chevrolet tahoe?
there is no easy way,you drop the fuel tank then its really easy, just hope its not got a full tank like most of my customers cars are when they have the same problem.good luck, anything i can do to help just e-mail me id be glad to.
Only one way - drop the tank, preferably as close to empty as possible.

Is it hard to change the fuel pump in a 96 dodge grand caravan?

Also....anyone know how much that would run to DIY and to take it somewhere? I am trying to weigh my options. But if its in the fuel tank....and more than a couple hundred to fix, I am just selling it. Thanks all!!
Is it hard to change the fuel pump in a 96 dodge grand caravan?
Yes all fuel injected engines have fuel pumps INSIDE the gas tank.

As for DYI, you should be VERY CAREFUL when working around gasoline and gas tanks.

If you decide to work on them

    (1) work away from the house or buildings

    (2) have fire extinguisher close by

    (3) have second person near by - just in case YOU catch fire

As for the cost, that depends on where you live as labor is huge part of the cost.

    Good Luck...

  • How do you change the fuel pump on a 1995 nissan pathfinder?

the fuel pump is in the gas tank and you have to drop it to get to it on most fuel injected cars and trucks' then you turn the round thing with a screw drive carefully so their is no spark and take it out

Fuel pump relay 93 beretta changed but still not allowing fuel pump to kick on any suggestions?

We tested the fuel pump, it works, changed the relay, that didnt work, does anyone have any suggestions?
Fuel pump relay 93 beretta changed but still not allowing fuel pump to kick on any suggestions?
You have to check the power delivery circuits to the fuel pump as you are saying the pump is okay, right? Install a test light to a good ground and to the power supply that is coming down the harness to the fuel pump. With the key off, there should be no light on. When the ignition is turned to on, the light should be on for about two seconds and then go off. When the key is turned to start the light should come on and stay on as long as you are cranking or running. There are two circuits that allow the fuel pump to work. One is the PCM conntrolling the relay by way of grounding the primary contacts to enable the secondary contacts. The other is from the oil pressure sensor or switch. These all have to be checked for power supplies, usually fuses or fusible links, and the switches that control them. You have to determine if you have a bad switch or an open wire somewhere.

Is there a fuel pump cut off safety switch somewhere---normaly under the dash.Do you have current at the pump You obviously have not, because if you did( and you say the pump is o k) then providing the fuel pump earth is ok it would work

How do I change my fuel pump and filter on 95 Buick regal?

I have to hotwire my fuel pump to the battery with speaker wire and put fuel on the carborator to even get it started. would that be my fuel pump. I am getting my fuel pump 2morrow MAY 13 so it would be appreciated to get reponses ASAP
How do I change my fuel pump and filter on 95 Buick regal?
the pump is in the tank what are you hot wiring.. the fuel filter could be bad and the air cleaner.. if it runds after priming the carburator its not the pump... and they are about two hundred.. so make shure.. change the air cleaner find the gas filter. ok..

Why should you change fuel fitler when you change pump?

mechanic said even tho filter is only a year old change it since my pump died? why is he suggesting that is that normal?
Why should you change fuel fitler when you change pump?
Its cheap insurance and most if not all fuel pump warranties will not apply unless you chage the filter and the screen in the tank. Also Debris from the failed pump could clog the filter. I would work with your mechanic and see if he wold allow you to buy the parts yourself to save money. Sources like Rockauto.com are great.
Why should you change fuel fitler when you change pump?
    just do it..

fuel filter are like what, 15 bucks?
If your pump came apart, then little pieces of plastic will get sucked into your filter. Change it for your sake.
i think a year is a little long to be going on a filter neways but i dont think that it would cause the pump to fail unless you have just a dangerously amount of trash in the tank. but then it still wouldnt run very good if it was plugged up too..
Because when the fuel pump dies it can pump tiny wear particles of itself into the fuel line while it is going bad.
USUALLY YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOU'RE FUEL FILTER ABOUT EVERY 35000 MILES YOU KNOW IT'S CHEAPER THAN A TOW

How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?

i want to change it myself but was just wondering?

How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?
its not real bad,the worst part of it is getting the tank off,try and get all the gas out of it that you can and get someone to help you, doing it by your self is kind of hard, you have to loosen and remove all the hoses and wires, and the loosen the tank and try and get it down level, putting the pump assembly in only takes about 25 minutes to do ,but getting it back up and in place and bolted back down takes some time, the less gas it has in it the easier the tank will be to handle, just be careful gas can and will explode if a spark gets to it,so take extreme caution when doing this, good luck.
How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?
its not just pop out the backseat and it is right there
It is not so hard and never fooled with neon but principals should be the same, pump is mounted in the tank so first find the test valve on the fuel rail and relieve the pressure, jack up the rear of car and block so you don't get killed, If there is a lot of fuel in tank try to siphon all you can get out and use a good floor jack with a platform to steady the tank as you drop it down after removing two support straps that hold it in place. you will have a wire connector to unplug and the fuel line to unhook so drop it slowly because you may not have much slack in either and unhook before dropping all the way. Once this is done there are several bolts to take out, to remove the fuel pump and reverse everything to install it . good luck
not hard, but playing with gas is no fun

pay someone to do it man

save yourself the trouble and headach
It is not too bad, I did it in abt 1 1/2 hrs by myself. Start with the tank as empty as you can. Put the passenger side (F%26amp;R) up on jack stands, disconnect the feed %26amp; return lines and electrical connector from the tank, loosen the support straps but do not remove them fully yet, then support the tank on the passenger side with a jack. Remove the passenger side support %26amp; carefully lower the passenger end of the tank. You should be able to lower it enough to access the pump retainer ring %26amp; gently tap it loose. It will be a tight fit but you can maneuver the pump out now. Swap the pump %26amp; reverse everything, doublecheck all your fittings/connectors %26amp; go. FYI, if you are replacing the pump now %26amp; are considering engine upgrades soon, put in the 255 pump now and only do it once! (This was on my early '95 sport coupe w/ the steel tank but my wife's 98 sport coupe looked the same!)

  • How can I change my fuel pump?

I have an 02 chevy blazer and the fuel pump needs to be changed. I know that the pump is in the gas tank, but is there a special tool I need?
How can I change my fuel pump?
you have guts kid.. i just done this on my 2000 blazer a few months back.. just a little warning before hand, IT IS HELLL TO DO! i thought it would be easy.. NEVER AGAIN MAN! but nah you dont need any special tools.. and it will prob. go out again.. the last one i replaced was my 2nd.. this is a very common problem for these vehicles..
How can I change my fuel pump?
no, you don,t need special tools, just drop the tank and change it.
No special tools. I just use a lift, a tranny jack, impact gun, set of sockets, a brass punch, a hammer, and fuel line quick disconnect tool.
theres no special tools needed but you do have to be really careful especially if you have a lot of gas in the tank try and get all of it out that you can,the gas tank is really hard to handle with even two gallons of gas in it,you need a repair manual to help you with this one,you have to remove a lot of lines and also a filler neck to drop the tank off,its dangerous, this i will tell you ,one tiny spark and you can set the gas off in the tank ,so be really carerful if you attempt doing this, its a job that most professinal shops dont like to do,good luck.
The tools to disconnect the fuel lines are very helpful and are inexpensive and available at most parts stores. If you haven't got a lot of experience in auto repair then you may want to pay someone or enlist a friend who is more experienced. The hardest part of doing this job without a lift is removing the tank slowly enough to disconnect the lines, filler neck, and electrical leads which are all different in length and accessibility. If you do it yourself without a lift you'll need a good floor jack (preferably a transmission jack with a wider surface) and the usual mechanic's hand tools as well as the fuel line tools. Try to not damage the rubber hose from the filler neck (which is hard to find) and do not break the plastic fuel lines. When you get is down, clean the rust and dirt away from the sending unit area before you knock the retaining ring off and again before you remove the sending unit. When you buy the pump, which is probably only available as an entire unit, make sure it comes with a new filter. Your warranty will not be valid without a new filter sock. Also, make sure you replace the inline fuel filter. Good luck.
u should only need comon tools to remove the tank, but u will need a special tool to remove the fuel lines, your local parts stor should fix up with that. dont forge to get as much of the gas out before you start its much easyer. be careful. also check to see if there is a hole panel in the floor under the mat before removing the tank, some change to doing that but im not sure when

Where is the fuel pump located on a 4-door 1994 chevy cavalier?
GM, in it's infinite wisdom, has decided to place the fuel pump inside the gas tank with NO access cover. In other words, you will have to drop your fuel tank to change it. Write them a nice letter and commend them on their engineering prowess!! Other car-makers have an access panel in the trunk or under the rear seat for just such things. Others mount the pump on the frame, under a cover, for easier access. Good Luck!!!! Hope you have some $$$ saved!

How do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?
haha... You will need to remove the whole tank. You need to remove your exhaust system and then lower your rear axle assembly to access the tank enough to pull it out. I reccommend using a hoist for the job. I don't think it is possible on the ground. A shop would charge approx 400$ for installation. If you are handy with a wrench its do able. And if its not going anywhere it will give you something to do. :)
How do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?
The 1982-02 camaro/firebird has one of the hardest to remove fuel tanks I have ever seen.

To change the elec pump you have to remove or atleast drop tank down.

To do this you pretty much have to drop the rear axle housing. The tank is only held in place by 2 straps with a bolt in each strap plus the filler neck. To get it to come down though you have to have body jacked up and supported high on stands, then you can remove shocks, panhard rod, torque arm, wheels, etc front rear end and if car is high enough up, then you can just let the rear end down, then pull tank and you might have enough clearance to get to the pump.

Alot of people even cuts the floor above gas tank, and removes pump from the top/inside of car
its not an easy task.you have to remove the rear axle and coponents then loosen the tank straps.unplug the conectors and fuel lines and remove the tank.once the tank is out you turn the lock ring and remove the pump.

How difficult is it to change a fuel pump in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier? What is the easiest way?

The dealer wants to charge $850 which is outrageous when the part costs 300 bucks. I'm pretty sure there is no easy way to do this. But is there anything to keep in mind while doing it besides draining the gas tank. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
How difficult is it to change a fuel pump in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier? What is the easiest way?
Why does it need a fuel pump? Is the vehicle not starting? Who diagnosed it was the pump in the first place? Regardless, if you have never done this before and you do not have the proper tools to drop the gas tank I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. If you do decide to give it a go, then have someone there who has a good assortment of tools and has done something like that before. Worst case scenario, you get the tank out but cant get it back in or you get it back in and it still doesn't start. You then tow it to a dealer who will now charge you even more to redo what you just did.
How difficult is it to change a fuel pump in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier? What is the easiest way?
the fuel pump goes inside the gas tank.

it it's still able to pump, the easiest way is to just feed your fuel line into a gas can and pump the gas out that way.

unless you can access the tank/pump from inside the car, you'll have to drop the fuel tank and replace it that way.

300$ actaully sounds low for the part. maybe the dealers hiding some inflation on the part in there. i'd call around, or do the work myself. 550 to change a fuel pump you can do better

How do you change the fuel pump on a 1997 Astro van 2 wheel drive?
You need to drop the fuel tank and use a brass or wood drift with a hammer to open up the top, (don't use steel, you'll blow your self up or just cause a fire) where the fuel pump and sending unit is. Try to change the fuel pump with a near empty tank. Sloshing fuel make the tank very hard to handle

Your gonna need to remove the filler hose, an electrical connector, and maybe some hose clamps and hoses.

Tie rags around your wrists so you don't end up with fuel in your arm pits (it stings, bad, for hours, don't ask how I know, I just know).

  • How do I change a fuel pump on a 1999 ford explorer?

i have a little bit of car knowledge, should i even attempt it, or just have a pro do it?
How do I change a fuel pump on a 1999 ford explorer?
The fuel tank must be removed. You also have to carefully unplug any electrical connectors and some very small and thin EVAP system hoses along with the fuel lines and fuel filler hose. It is best to have a lift for this as well as a fuel tank or transmission lift because when you're putting it back in, you have to stop before it's all of the way up in order to reconnect all of the hoses and connectors, in various order, and in various positions. It's also very important to clean the outside of the tank before removing the fuel pump so that no contaminants reach the inside of the tank. In order to separate hoses from their fittings, I recommend a pick tool to loosen them first before pulling them off and you may need quick disconnect tools for the fuel and evap lines. When putting hoses back on, put some petroleum jelly on the outside of the pipe and inside of the hoses to ease installation. This substance will not harm the rubber or the fuel it comes into contact with. If any of these things seem overwhelming, then take it to a professional repair facility, preferrably one that is a Blue Seal rated one by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. This will ensure that the shop is in the top 3-4% of all shops in the nation. You're more likely to get a better warranty as well as a better quality part. This part is so important that I recommend OE level quality or better since it is so hard to replace again. Also beware of the %26quot;lifetime warranty%26quot; that you may get from a discount part supplier because they will give you a new one every time, but you will have to lower that tank everytime too, and let's not forget about the tow bill and being stranded. Hope this helps you make your decision.

No need to, just install the pump and turn the key, if it doesn't start then the fuel pump wasn't the problem.

Bah, there's no need to do that. If it were a diesel, then yes you would have to.
I have a 1995 chevrolet corsica and I am tyring to bleed the fuel lines after changing my pump. How do I?
as stated above theres no need to (unless diesel, but its not).

just turn key to the on position, not start, and leave there for a few moments,(give time for the pump to push the fuel from the tank to the engine) then start car.
no need to bleed justb turn over may take awhileb but will start

Can a bad alternator make a fuel pump go bad?

I recently had to change my fuel pump, but today I went out and the car wouldnt start. It was clicking when it tried to turn it over. I jumped started it with another car and its ran fine. I am thinking the alternator might be the issue, but I lack in the mechanical department. Any ideas?
Can a bad alternator make a fuel pump go bad?
I dont believe a poor alternator will damage a fuel pump. But in many vehicles there is a safety system built into the computer which thinks that if the motor is not turning then the fuel pump should not be pumping, it uses the alternator as a sensor as to whetehr the motor is turning. (Basically this turns off the fuel pump in an accident) So if your altenator is shot the the fuel pump may not activate. Also on many vehicles the fuel pump circuit required a set voltage to activate the fuel pump( on some Fords EECIV systems for eg if you get below 9.2 volts during cranking the pump wont turn on but motor seems to be cranking fine)

Yep a bad alternator will stop a pump from workning but wont damage it.

no the alt. wont make the fuel pump go but the fuel pump could play a part in the alt. going bad the pump failing will work the alt. harder and cause it to fail it is easy to check all you need to do is with the car running take the positive battery cable off if the car dies out the alt. is bad also with the car running put a screw driver to the back of the alt. on the round shaft if it fees like a magnet it is good looks like a ASE certified tech would say that insread of just no we are here to help not just get points
    no
not likely. sounds like unrelated issues. have battery and alternator tested.
No a bad alternator will not make a fuel pump go bad. Chances are very good that the battery will not hold a charge. If you have a VOM check the battery when the engine is off. About 12.4 Volts is minimum. About 14 to 16 would be about right it the engine is running.
Possibly your alternator is bad. Also it could be just a dead cell in the battery, especially if the battery is a bit old. The alternator will not make the fuel pump go out though. If you have a Auto Zone, O'Reilly's or any other major auto parts chain bring it by there and they will usually check your battery and alternator for free right on site. Also check your wires from battery to alternator. On my Bronco, I had a wire broken and was not letting alternator recharge my battery. Hope this helps. Good luck.
    Simply,No.
Not likely. Low or no voltage to the fuel pump would have no effect on it, except it wouldn't run with no volts. Got a volt meter? Start the vehicle and put the volt meter across the battery terminals. If it read at near 14 volts, alternator is okay.

Read the battery voltage with the engine turned off. it it's below 11 volts, replace the battery.
First of all, have the battery checked, sometimes they don't even last for a week, I'm serious. If you heard clicks, it's definitely your battery, they will check your charging system when you have the battery checked. If you need to take the battery out, (to replace with a new one) take off the ground terminal first and don't let it touch anything as you take off the positive terminal. A bad alternator couldn't possibly affect your fuel pump, just a coincidence. I would suggest a dry battery, like the Optima. A little more money, but worth it. If not just get one at Pep Boys, or any auto parts store, even k-mart or Wal-mart. Good luck

A similiar Q. not getting gas but if u put a little gas in carb starts up but quits, changed fuel pump a month?

put it in shop they changed bracket, and ran good for a week and broke down, could it be fuel pump again, or maybe relay or something
A similiar Q. not getting gas but if u put a little gas in carb starts up but quits, changed fuel pump a month?
    Try changing your fuel filter.

By the way, did you happen to run out of gas? Modern fuel pumps are electric, and are in the fuel tank, and depend on the fuel to keep it cool. Run out of gas and you'll fry the pump.

Does anyone know where the Fuel Pump Relay is located on a 1990 Toyota Pickup V6?

I changed the fuel pump, that was not the problem. I checked the fuses %26amp; relays I could find and that didn't fix it, I wired the fuel pump up with a new wire to the fuse box, now it will start, but if you don't hold the key to start for a couple secs. and keep it running, it dies.
Does anyone know where the Fuel Pump Relay is located on a 1990 Toyota Pickup V6?
check the passenger side kick panel located next to the door jam it should pull off and there you may see a relay or get a chilton or haynes manual and look for automatic shutdown relay or rollover relay....somtimes they can get kicked or bumped or just go bad
Does anyone know where the Fuel Pump Relay is located on a 1990 Toyota Pickup V6?
try looking by the passenger side under by the dashboard it should be all the way to the right by the door. that's where they use to put them good luck

  • Is it possible to just change the seal on a mk2 mondeo diesel fuel pump?

I have taken the car to the garage, and they have told me that the fuel pump seal is broken, but they want a lot (拢拢拢's) to get a new pump. Can I change the pump for a second-hand one (breakers yard) or even just change the seal?

    Any help would be appreciated!
Is it possible to just change the seal on a mk2 mondeo diesel fuel pump?
no A pump is regulated and tested after it is reconditioned and they will not only change the seal that has failed but put an entire seal kit on it. If one seal has failed the chances are others may be on the way out so just replacing one seal is a false economy.I am not sure if you can just swap components over nowadays as most cars engine management systems are computer controlled and the average home mechanic does not have the equipment to carry out the work .Your best bet would be to acquire a Haynes manual if it says you can do it in their then you probably can if not it is best left to the experts.Get a few quotes or personal recommendations are better but remember the cheapest are cheap for a reason and you may find you have serious problems on your car you did not realise that have to be fixed.
Is it possible to just change the seal on a mk2 mondeo diesel fuel pump?
used pumps are a risk, repaired ones are expensive, new ones are more expensive. Only the latter two are reliable. NB ebay is your friend.
Take it to a fuel injection specialist they can recondition it for you

If i change the fuel pump do i have to change the fuel sensor?

i think i might have to change my fuel pump but somebody was telling me if i i change the fuel pump that i have to change the fuel sensor and it would cost about 300 dollars is that true? i have a 95 s-10 chevy
If i change the fuel pump do i have to change the fuel sensor?
    not true
If i change the fuel pump do i have to change the fuel sensor?
You should not have to change out the sensor, is your fuel pump is in the tank or on the frame rail, if it is in the tank it might have the pump and tank level sensor as one unit, if it is in the frame rail then no, you just remove 2 or 3 fittings and change it out, simple repair, harder if in the tank, as you will need to drop the whole tank to get the pump
If the fuel pump is in tank, examine the outlet of that assembly and see if there is some corrosion, if so then replace all. It'll save you time later if that outlet should start leaking.

I don't think that whole assembly is 300 either...
95 s-10 you can replace just the pump alone. But, the sending unit lines might be rusted and may twist off when you remove the lines, unless it has quick disconnect fitting on the sending unit, but I don't think it does. The only reason you should have to replace the complete assembly is if it is rusted or the fuel level sending unit doesn't operate properly.

I really must advise against using aftermarket fuel pumps like from Napa, Carquest, O'reily. I am member of the International Automotive Technician's Network, and I see dozens if not hundreds of repairs on all gm vehicles, especially trucks, where aftermarket pumps were used and came back with multiple problems. Save your sanity and time and use a genuine AC Delco pump. You'll thank me in the long run.

Does anyone know how to change a fuel pump on a 85 Buick Century pictures would be great like a manual???

I am trying to change the fuel pump on my mom's car but she does not have a manual for the car so any help would be appreciated
Does anyone know how to change a fuel pump on a 85 Buick Century pictures would be great like a manual???
The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. You will have to remove the tank from the car to change the pump. There are two bolts that hold the tank straps to the frame, these will have to be removed, BUT they are usually rusted quite bad. I would suggest soaking them with a good penetraiting oil for a couple of days before you even attempt to remove them.

You will need to put a floor jack of some kind under the tank to support it so you can lower it down. You will also need to remove the fill neck, and disconnect the hoses and wires to the sending unit before you lower the tank all the way.

Once the tank is on the ground you will have to remove the sending unit, there is a ring that has to turn to unlock it from the tank, you will need a special tool to turn this ring, or a brass (NON SPARKING) punch to tap it around counter clockwise to remove it.

Once the ring is off, you can remove the sending unit fom the tank, unclip the pump from the sender, replace the hose that it hooks into (usually supplied with your new pump), and replace the suction strainer/sock at the bottom (not always supplied)

Then reverse the steps to install. and check for leaks, there is a large O-Ring between the sender and the tank, make sure you install this correctly, and it doesn't shift out of place while re-installing the sending unit.

Good luck...many of the fittings holding the tubes to the sender can be quite rusty and a real pain to remove...if you tweek any of the lines you will be replacing lines OR the sending unit. (some can be expensive).
Does anyone know how to change a fuel pump on a 85 Buick Century pictures would be great like a manual???
go to the auto parts store and buy a Haynes repair manual. They are only about $15. If the pump is in the gas tank you will ave to remove that to get to it.
you have to drop the gas tank . Take pictures as you go so you remember how to put it back together.

I want to buy this used RX7, i need to change the fuel pump, clutch wire and brake lin?

So title pretty much says all, Im looking to buy this RX7, its a 2nd generation, non-turbo car. prolly between '86-'89

So is it hard to change these parts? The fuel pump is included so i can change it myself, but the brake line and clutch wire, are those expensive/hard to instal?

    thank you.
I want to buy this used RX7, i need to change the fuel pump, clutch wire and brake lin?
If you just patch the brake lines, you need special tools and skills. If you buy a complete length of OEM brake line that fits your vehicle, you could replace it if you can get it installed under the car which requires car ramps, safety jack stands and wheel chocks. Even then you'll have to take it to a brake shop to bleed the brakes, so you might as well have them install the new brake lines. It won't be cheap and could easily be $1,000 to replace several rusted out brake lines and restore the brakes to safe working order. The fuel pump may require you to remove the fuel tank from the car.

Just changed fuel pump in 1999 gmc sonoma but gas gage still dont work any suggestions?

I assume youre talking about an electric fuel pump otherwise youve wasted your time. to test whether its your sender (in tank) or guage earth(ground) the sender wire with ign. on and guage should read full if it doesnt its probably your dash guage unless connections are loose or rubbed through on body as previous answer stated. hope this helps
Just changed fuel pump in 1999 gmc sonoma but gas gage still dont work any suggestions?
check the wiring connections or a loose ground
Just changed fuel pump in 1999 gmc sonoma but gas gage still dont work any suggestions?
When you say you changed the pump, do you mean you changed the entire sending unit? The sending unit includes the floater which measures the amount of gas in the tank. If you only changed the pump, then check the floater. If you did the whole sending unit, then there is something wrong between the tank and the gauge.

  • How much should it cost to change a fuel pump on a '97 chevy blazer?

I have a 97 blazer that broke down on the side of the road I had it towed to a local garage as it was not something fixable along the highway. They told me the fuel pump needs replaced and gave me a quote of $600 is that reasonable, or are they ripping me off since my car is kind of stuck there.

add the fuel pump is in the fuel tank
How much should it cost to change a fuel pump on a '97 chevy blazer?
if u call a local parts store in ur area, and ask them the %26quot;list%26quot; price of that pump, i think you'll find that the %26quot;list%26quot; price is someplace in the $320 area...now understand, %26quot;cash%26quot; price is different from %26quot;list%26quot; price, so while the pump %26quot;cash%26quot; price may only be $225, the %26quot;list%26quot; price, which is the price the shop will charge you for it will be $320 and then they will charge you labor.

i have heard these pumps are very expensive, and labor today can run as high as $90 an hour and even more...if u believe its high, and have other shops in the area, u may wanna get a second opinion on the price...shops are hungry in this economy, u may find a better rate someplace else.

I have an '01 Pontiac Grand Am. The fuel pump has gone out 3 times in the past 6 months. Why does this happen?

We've changed the fuel pump the first two times %26amp; had it put in the shop last time! Is there something I should know about a Grand Am's fuel pump? Anyone else have this problem with this type of car?
I have an '01 Pontiac Grand Am. The fuel pump has gone out 3 times in the past 6 months. Why does this happen?
check the filter if it is not a internal filter i could be restricting the motor in the pump causing it to go bad although fuel pump are defective very frequently put 4 pumps in one car bout 2 months ago.. bout 6 months ago i replaced 2 and it turned out to be sugar in the tank. so its justone of those unrealiable parts %26quot;anything made by man is subject to error%26quot; just like a bad condom lol
I have an '01 Pontiac Grand Am. The fuel pump has gone out 3 times in the past 6 months. Why does this happen?
I would replace the filter drop the gas tank drain and clean it t make sure there is noting in the tank. I have seen people that get bad gas assume the pump went bad they replace it then the next one goes out they think its a bad pump or filter when the third goes out they look in the tank and see the trash floating in the tank.

Where exactly is the fuel pump on a 89 honda civic?

Fuel Injected, do I have to drop the tank to change the fuel pump
Where exactly is the fuel pump on a 89 honda civic?
The fuel pump is located underneath the back seat. Take out the back seat and you will see a silver plate with 3 screws and wires coming out of it. Under that plate is the fuel pump. No, you don't have to drop the tank.
Where exactly is the fuel pump on a 89 honda civic?
Yes unfortunately you do,The fuel pump is located in the top of your fuel tank. On the CRX you can access it by removing the back seat. But I dont think thats the case with a civic.

Can anyone tell me how to change a fuel filter and/or pump on a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

I have a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that sputters when I step on the gas. It stalled this morning when I was idling at a stop light but started right back up again. Could this be the fuel filter or fuel pump? Is the fuel filter located in the gas tank? If anyone can give me a walk-through on how to change the fuel filter and/or pump, I would greatly appreciate it.
Can anyone tell me how to change a fuel filter and/or pump on a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?
The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. To change the fuel pump you will have to remove the fuel tank.

There is an inline fuel filter that is not so hard to change. Try that first. It is located near the fuel tank under the rear of the Jeep.

Stalling at idle is more likely caused by a dirty idle speed control solenoid. This can be cleaned by spraying throttle body cleaner into the little slot near the throttle plate inside the throttle body.

Before servicing the fuel pump or filter, you need to test the fuel pressure. Many auto parts stores have loaner tools available or they may check it for you. The tool consists of a pressure gage that connects to the fuel pressure test port. Normal pressure for the aniline six is around 40psi. A faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause the problems you are seeing as well.

If you do remove the fuel pump form the tank, pay close attention to he rubber hose that connects the pump to the lines. I just had a time tracking down a mystery fuel pressure problem in a Cherokee that turned out to be a pin hole in that little rubber hose.

Fuel pump Need to be changed Nissan 1999 pathfinder?

I have a Nissan Pathfinder with 162,000 miles on it. I have never replaced the fuel pump on it. I am currently not having any problems with the pathfinder running. I am taking it to the shop to get the fuel filter changed soon should I get the fuel pump replaced also due to he high milage ?
Fuel pump Need to be changed Nissan 1999 pathfinder?
if your going to take that attitude you may as well replace the engine and trans as well

nissan fuel pumps are good ones some of them you don't need to pull the tank to replace don't replace it until you have a problem its not a scheduled maintenance item it may out last the car

spend your cash on a night out with your wife/ girlfriend you will get more value for that
Fuel pump Need to be changed Nissan 1999 pathfinder?
Preventative maintenance is a good thing but not all fuel pumps go bad. Some fuel pumps will last the life of a car and some even longer. Typically this part is not replaced until it goes bad, for that reason.
You dont need to change the fuel pump for preventive maintenance.
No, I wouldn't. It could last forever.

Is the filter in the tank? The pump probably is.

    Remember this old Air Force maintenance adage, %26quot;If it ain't broke, keep fixing it until it is broke.%26quot;
No, the only time I've seen a fuel pump fail was because of the wiring at the pump. The wires get corroded and break off. A customer was told the whole gas tank would need to be replaced because the screws holding the pump housing to the tank always break off. If the wires break off the pump terminals I have used a 1/16%26quot; drill bit and drilled 1/4%26quot; into the brass terminal block on the pump housing, then crimp an eye connector to the broken wire/wires and re-fasten them using sheet metal screws. It takes about 20 minutes and saves $500 or more in repair costs. The pump is still working 2 years later. If the filter is rusted and won't come off just leave it, gas is pretty clean now days and most vehicles don't have replaceable filters anymore.
well i have worked on cars a while and if your not having any problems i wouldn't there are signs of a bad fuel pump poor mileage or running rough but some just go all of a sudden so its really your call its your dollar

I believe those audis had the fuel pump inside the gas tank. If it does, then you have to remove the back seat and you'll find a small door you have to remove to get at it.

Is it possible to change the fuel pump on a 1996 LT1 Pontiac Trans Am without dropping the fuel tank?

Is the fuel pump in the fuel tank?
Is it possible to change the fuel pump on a 1996 LT1 Pontiac Trans Am without dropping the fuel tank?
You can't get there from here - the tank has to be dropped. It can be done in a driveway with a set of jackstands (never do it with the car just supported with the jack itself!).
Is it possible to change the fuel pump on a 1996 LT1 Pontiac Trans Am without dropping the fuel tank?
You have it figured out already, the pump is in the tank, accessible from the top. Some people have actually air chiseled a hole in the trunk floor to get to it. It sucks.
yes sir the fuel pump is in the gas tank good luck its alot of work but you can do it
its in the tank but cutting hole is worse thing to do cause it will never look like a pro did it better to lower tank gm has finally put door in trunk to get to these on newer cars they should have done it sooner like the same year they put pumps in the tank
Yes and no. You can always take out your back seat get a hole saw and cut a huge hole in the metal right above the fuel pump...but good luck getting the harness and fuel lines to clear. Honestly this isnt a bad a job. Both fuel lines are quick connect and there is 2 bolts holding the straps on. If you do it right you WILL NOT have to take the exhaust off.
probably not, some people cut holes in the rear interior to get to the top of the gas tank w/out dropping it, next time!! which means yes drop the tank and see if you can cut an interior hole so next time you wont have to drop the tank. wtf once the seat is replace only you will know you have a hole in the interior
the pump is in the tank yes. but if you want to cut away to get it out you can its your car. it will most likely take you just as long to cut a hole as it will to drop the tank. As a matter of fact i have cut a hole and made it look good. but really how many times are you going to change to fuel pump? and i didnt pull out the seats. the pump i in the middle of the hump behind the seats i just folded up the carpet from the back. anyway dude its your car. I got a 1994 LT1
The pump is in the tank and to do it RIGHT you should drop the tank. There are plenty of people that have cut access doors in the floor above where the pump is....but IMO that's a hack job in 99% of the cases.

Hey you dont talk to me like that! I drive a Dodge Stratus!
Fuel pump is it hard to change 2005 dodge startus?
no..Just take down the tank if it doesnt have a floor opening, and remove it from the top of the tank.!

    easy peasy!
They are a lot more difficult to change than they used to be now that they are part of the fuel tank. Used to be simple diaphragm pumps driven off the cam shaft - very accessible right in the engine compartment. Now they have to be electric pumps for the fuel injection - much more expensive and complicated. Gotta be careful about static electricity and other spark sources when working on the fuel tank. Many libraries have service manuals or you can get one at many car parts stores or major book stores or direct from the dealer. May find info on the web as well.

Changed fuel pump and still no fuel pressure is there a relay switch and if so where is it located?
there is a fuel regulator valve on the fuel rail just past the last injector---that may be your problem.

There is also a safety fuel cut off ( in the event of an accident) that may be tripped. The switch is usually under the dash. Another possibility.

  • 2000 ford mustang is getting terrible gas mileage after the fuel pump was changed why?

i was getting about 325 miles to a tank of gas. the fuel pump was changed and now i am getting about 210 miles to a tank. any ideas why? the fuel system has been pressure tested and there are no leaks.
2000 ford mustang is getting terrible gas mileage after the fuel pump was changed why?
One idea may be that before the fuel pump was not pumping to pressure and thus your engine was running lean. The second may be that the fuel pressure regulator is disconnected under the hood and your running rich but I think you would have burned up your cat converters by now. Does the car stink like rotten eggs? That would be a sign of high fuel pressure. If all else checks out pay for an hour of diagnosis time, let the mechanic determine if anythings wrong. 210 miles to the tank definitely does not sound right.
2000 ford mustang is getting terrible gas mileage after the fuel pump was changed why?
My car did the same thing. Its because your old fuel pump wasn't giving your car enough and now it is. Therefore it makes your gas go faster to you when it is actually right.
    210??

    wow..

    thats tooo significant.

you may be running too rich, check your plugs and if they are really black, somethings wrong.

maybe the EFI, since its fuel injected

Honestly, I would recomend buying a Repair Manual from an auto parts store. It should have enough information in it to help you out. They usually cost around $16.00-$20.00 .
    disconnect the battery

floor jack under the gas tank - and a buddy for help.

Now take the gas tank straps off completly.

lower the tank slowly - (no smoking)

There is a ring around the pump assembly - where all the hoses are.

Take a flat screw driver and a small hammer - there are 3 lips you turn to loosen that o ring.

Then it just lifts up and out.

Once off you will see the motor inside.
easiest way on an s10 is to remove the bed of the truck,, 4 bolts and couple guys can lift it off, we've done it here in the drive way at least a dozen times . disconnect the battery cable and ground yourself to the truck before working on the fuel pump,,, from there on its just remove and replace... just be careful with the plastic fittings, they can be brittle... and do not forget to replace the filter too. OH.. and NO SMOKING!!!
When I changed the fuel pump in my 2000 S-10.Jack the truck up in the rear.Take the wheels off for access to the filler neck and lines on top of the tank.Relieve the pressure in the fuel system. With an assistant and a jack under the tank, remove the straps and SLOOOOOWLY lower the tank as the filler tube and vent are disconnected and the lines are taken off @ the top of the tank.Lower the tank to the floor.

Remove the lock ring holding the fuel pump module in to the gas tank. Remove the module. Good luck on this .Mine was a flex fuel system and parts could only be bought at the dealer. The entire module had to be replaced@ over $400 and I was lucky they had one.

    Reverse procedure to re assemble.
doesn't show you in the book that came with the vehicle. If not buy one of those Childens books that contains all the info about every car.

How much would it cost to change the fuel pump on a '92 century?

My usual mechanic said that it needs to be jacked up so the fuel tank could be removed. He also said that it might cost up to $500 dollars! I hope he was exaggerating.
How much would it cost to change the fuel pump on a '92 century?
He wasn't. GM has been putting fuel pumps in the gas tank for a long time. $500.00 is not an unreasonable estimate, and unless you have experience changing out fuel pumps where you have to remove the gas tank I don't recommend it.
How much would it cost to change the fuel pump on a '92 century?
6 pack o beer plus parts.

    Do it yourself.
your mechanic is about right on.

On my 98 toyota camry,my check engine light is on, they said i need fuel pump,it is not accelerating well,?

After diagnosis, they said the emissions is good, and the mechanics changed the fuel filter, but the light is still on, and stalls while driving, i have to hit the gas hard sometimes for it to pick up normall acceleration, would changing the fuel pump completely solve the problem,

    kim
On my 98 toyota camry,my check engine light is on, they said i need fuel pump,it is not accelerating well,?
First thing you have to understand (and accept) is that car diagnostics is an educated guessing game. Nobody knows for sure what is wrong until the suspected parts are replaced.

But if the mechanic did a fuel pressure test, then he would have a good indicator of whether fuel pump is broken.

DID he do a fuel pressure test? Or is he completely guessing in the dark?

    Good Luck...
On my 98 toyota camry,my check engine light is on, they said i need fuel pump,it is not accelerating well,?
Yeah. Changing fuel pump is your last possible move to solve your problem.
It's a good possibility that the fuel pump is the problem. If the mechanic did a fuel pressure and volume test to come up with this diagnosis, chances are pretty good that a fuel pump will fix the problem. How do I change a fuel pump on a 1997 grand am gt?

I have gotten one of the two fuel tank straps off but I cannot get the other one. If there is some kind of trick to get that one strap under the passenger side off I would love to hear it.
How do I change a fuel pump on a 1997 grand am gt?
Use a shallow socket, swivel adapter, or wobble extension, and it should clear any obstacle you may face. Some have the heat sheild for exhaust in way, but a few 7mm bolts removed and it should come out and give you clearance.
How do I change a fuel pump on a 1997 grand am gt?
After the strap comes off, you will need a special tool to unhook the fuel lines. Don't pry them with a screwdriver, they will break, and they must be replaced with expensive factory parts for the car to work. I encourage people to work on their own cars, but this can be a trying operation if you don't have a fair amount of mechanical background. Also, be careful. If the tank has much fuel in it, it is often heavier than you might expect.

doesn't come on i cheanged the ignition module coill pack plugs wires, . sometimes when the cars is at a stand still and running i hear a loud thud in the fuel tank. the fuel pump acts like its whats to come on but the the car will start and turn on but shut off and at other times the car is fine.
I have a 1995 buick park avenue i changed the fuel pump but when its cold i turn the key sometimes the pump?
Well when you put in the new pump did you replace the screen on the end?

Did you replace the fuel filter?

If say the pump is trying to pump and say the filter is stopted up the pump turns on, feels a lot of resistance and then shuts down.

Sorry to say looks like you need to pull the pump out again.

Where is the fuel pump located on a 2002 Ford Escort?

I believe that I have to change the fuel pump in my car because whenever I drive it it dies on me but it comes right back on. I have already changed the fuel filter so I assume its the fuel pump but I don't know where it is. Can someone help me please!!
Where is the fuel pump located on a 2002 Ford Escort?
I don't know for sure, but am guessing that it's located inside of the fuel tank. That's where most electric fuel pumps are. And the car is way too late model to have a mechanical pump located on the side of the engine.
Where is the fuel pump located on a 2002 Ford Escort?
I'm not positive on a 02 but on my 86 it was in the rear up by the gas tank
Your fuel pump is in the gas tank, but I wouldn't change it until it tested bad. You need to test the fuel pressure.

Most fuel injection engines are in the gas tank, but most cars have two fuel filters, one one the firewall inside the engine conpartment and one near the gas tank inline with the fuel lines.also check your air filter to see if it needs changing because it will cause the same problems and eat up fuel because it isnt getting enough air for the air to fuel mixture.

Good luck and hopr this helps.
Behind the engine . some coupld be black powerd coat , brass, or sliver .
The fuel pump is in the tank. Most Escorts have an access cover on the passenger side under the rear seat to get to the fuel pump. Beats the heck out of dropping the tank, trust me!
in the gas tank...on almost all modern cars the pump is in the gas tank
as with most vehicles that where made in 1990 or newer the fuel pump should more than likely be in the gas tank.

I need help with Fuel pump wiring?

I recently changed fuel pumps in my 91 camaro. I noticed however that the wires didn't match up so I had to do some splicing. I know I need to do everything correctly, but for now I just spliced the wires and wrapped in electrical tape. This is all Inside my fuel tank. Is there any way that the wires could spark and blow me to smithereens!!!???
I need help with Fuel pump wiring?
I would suggest not to do anything(even turn the key)until you fix the wiring correctly, there is a small chance you could start a fire but any chance is to much of a risk, the electrical tape will not stay on as the fuel will melt the glue and very likely the tape. Can I suggest to cut the wiring outside the tank and splice outside the fuel tank?unless the terminals are different or you have no way of obtaining a new harness.good luck

Does a 2002 Cavalier have a trunk access panel to change the fuel pump?

My fuel Pump just died and the shop is asking $640.00 to replace it since they only use oem factory parts and the pump cost $450.00. I could just buy a Bosch for 275.00 but If I have to drop the tank I'm not even gonna attempt it.

    Thanks for the help!
Does a 2002 Cavalier have a trunk access panel to change the fuel pump?
No, the trunk floor pan does not have an access panel. After doing many a fuel tank pump change, one learns where to make the cut in the trunk floor pan. This is called flat rating. A gallon paint can lid makes a nice cover to replace the hole that was cut slightly smaller then the paint lid. Note: this does not apply to all vehicles and the customer should be informed of what you are doing.

The fuel pump is in the tank itself.

The worst part of changing a fuel pump is draining the gas. It's not fun but it's not difficult either.

There are three relays near the brake master cylinder. They are the a/c clutch, eec power relay, and the fuel pump relay. With the a/c off, turn the key on while touching the relays. One will click once, that is the power relay for the pcm, another will click twice, that is the fuel pump relay.

Does anybody here know how to change a fuel pump on a Honda civic EF?
What year is it? It's probably in the gas tank and there may or may not be access from the top. Look under the car to see where the gas tank is located. Then see if there is access either in the trunk or under the rear seat. If not, you will have to drop the gas tank to access the fuel pump. Click the link below for step by step instructions.

i have basically been quoted 350 to change a fuel pump, could i do it myself and how?

i live in darlington if anyone can help
How change a fuel pump on a renault megane 02?
The fuel pump is fitted in to the top of the fuel tank, if you lift up the rear seat base on the drivers side of the car you should find a round black access panel. Remove that panel and you can see the top of the pump, squeeze the coloured squares on the fuel pipes to release them, disconnect the electrical connector and then unscrew the large black plastic nut that holds the pump in to the tank. The nut will be tight and dealers use a special tool to release it, although it is possible to remove it by using a hammer and a screw driver and tapping it round. The biggest problem with this job is that some times when the nut is taken off it won't go back on due to the tank neck distorting, this usually results in replacing the fuel tank !

How much should it cost to replace a fuel pump on a 96 GMC sonoma?

My mechanic is charging me $600 to change the fuel pump on my truck. How bad am I being raped?
How much should it cost to replace a fuel pump on a 96 GMC sonoma?
You are NOT being raped. GM used a very pricey High Pressure pump that is put inside the Fuel tank. Going price on one of these is 5-700 bucks. It is the same with ALL of the GM trucks of this era. Your mechanic has to drop the fuel tank to change this... which takes time... and the pump alone is over 350 bucks at the Dealer. If money is really tight... U could get a used pump from a Salvage yard and have that installed. However, if it dies you will be right back where you are now! It stinks, but this is going rate for this job... Good Luck!

Why don't you call around to several garages and get estimates. Then you will know.

  • How to get my car to restart my 1989 jeep cherokee after changing the fuel pump?

i ran out of gas in my 1989 jeep cherokee 4.0,v6. i checked the valv technique on the injector rail and there was no fuel coming just air up the sistem.

is there any other thing that i need to do in order to get that gas out of the thank and into my injectors?

Can i have a detailed explanation on how to change the gas tank and fuel pump on my 1989 chevy silverado?
If you have no clue on how to do this, DO NOT DO THIS JOB.

To replace a fuel pump, water pump, battery is one thing when someone doesn't know what they are doing. But to replace a gas tank by a person with no experience is asking for problems.

A mechanics shop in my town allowed a rookie to change a tank out at the shop. That shop blew up later that day and killed 2 people. When I worked at Lexus and they were removing a gas tank. EVERYONE in the service area had to leave while only 2 mechanics did the work.

An empty gas tank is like a bomb. The last person you want touching a bomb is a person with no experience.

Save up the money and have a professional do the job.
Can i have a detailed explanation on how to change the gas tank and fuel pump on my 1989 chevy silverado?
    No!
it is really not that hard. follow the wires from your fuel pump and disconnect them. it should just be a connector. there may or may not be straps around the tank. if there are, remove them. I would recommend you get a jack so that you can hold up the tank. After that, there should only be a few bolts that hold the tank to the chassis. also open your gas tank cap where you fuel up and take off the bolts that hold the neck to the frame.. that is about it
ok not a lot to say about it first might need to poeple best to have a floor jack theres straps you loosen let doen with jack remove hoses and wires dont forget filler tank hoseonce down the filter and pump in in center as a lock ring that you tap a round to line up with a notch and then it lifts out only hard part will be strap bolts and lettting it down and up the more gas the harder it will be so if you can get what you can out it will be better thus the two people and jack but heres a link might help some and if you type in how to remove fuel pump chevy silverado at yourtube might find someone who has a video stap nuts will be the worse some spary them good before starting and good luck

How to get to the fuel pump on a 1989 honda civic.?

My car turns over but wont start. This happened like two months ago. I changed the fuel pump then, And re-soldered the relay. The car worked fine for like two months then it wouldn't start again. I disconnected the fuel line going into the fuel filter and tried to start it and the gas barely streamed out. I think it might be the fuel filter in the gas tank. Is there any other way to get to the filter without taking the gas tank all the way off. Is there any other suggestions.

Most Honda vehicles have a panel under the back seat for you to be able to change the fuel pump with out having to remove the fuel tank.
How to get to the fuel pump on a 1989 honda civic.?
    1988-91 MODELS

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank.

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    Relieve the fuel system pressure.

Raise and safely support the vehicle.

Remove the fuel tank drain bolt and drain the fuel into a suitable container.

On Civic models (except CRX and Wagon) unplug the fuel pump electrical connector in the trunk. On CRX, remove the storage compartment and unplug the fuel pump electrical connector. On Civic Wagon, remove the rear seat and carefully disengage the fuel pump electrical harness.

On Civic Wagon with 4WD, remove the driveshaft from the rear differential and the exhaust pipe and muffler.

Remove the 2-way valve cover and fuel hose protector.

    Unbolt the fuel lines.

Place a suitable support under the fuel tank.

Remove the fuel tank strap nuts and let the straps hang.

    Remove the fuel tank.

Remove the fuel pump mounting nuts and the fuel pump.

    To install:

Install the pump assembly into the tank and make sure the unit is properly sealed.

Install the tank into the vehicle and tighten the strap nuts. Connect the hoses and wiring.

On 4WD vehicles, connect the driveshaft and the exhaust system.

Put about three gallons of fuel into the tank and test the system.

What does a high pitched hum coming from a fuel pump mean?

I recently changed the fuel pump in my 99 chevy silverado and now theres a high pitched whine or hum coming from it. It seems to be running fine, though. Also, ever since I changed it, the digital odometer, %26quot;message center%26quot; and digital gear indicator is out. Would this just be a fuse or something in the lines connected to the fuel pump?
What does a high pitched hum coming from a fuel pump mean?
Kinda sounds like you might not have the ground installed, did you drop the tank or raise the bed??
What does a high pitched hum coming from a fuel pump mean?
Sounds like a bad fuel pump, or it was installed incorrectly and touching another piece of metal, which is causing a loud vibrating noise.
    It means it's pumping..
some fuel pumps make that noise when they run its just how they are

How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?

My car was fine, then one day when I started it I had trouble. It ran fine for a few seconds, then began running rough, and within 2 blocks had gotten so rough it sputtered and died. It hasn't started since, but it does crank. I don't hear the fuel pump coming on. I replaced the fuel pump relay already but need to do the fuel pump itself I guess. That's the only thing I can think it might be. I'm a little leary of working around the gas tank, but I have to do this myself. I don't have a manual, so any helpful tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?
Hopefully there's not a lot of fuel in the tank as the straps have to come off around the tank and it has to be lowered safely to disconnect the wiring and hoses from the top center of the tank. If there is a lot of fuel in the tank unfortunately you can't stick a hose in the fuel opening to siphon it out. The marvelous engineers have installed an internal blocking gate so people can't steal the fuel by trying to siphoning it out.

Simply look for a large rubber hose between the tank and the first piece of metal tubing that leads to the fill pipe on the outside if the car. Disconnect the hose as close to the tank as possible an siphon all the gas you can into a lawnmower plastic gas can.

There is a large square fitting on the top that will require a large pair of water pump pliers or a pipe wrench to unscrew counterclockwise. The fuel pump and the tank float will lift out as a unit.
How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?
You need to put the car on jack stands or a lift.you need to put a jack under the gas tank. There should be some clamps along the frame rail you will need to get off of the metal gas line to free it so it will not bend so much when you drop the gas tank.then take the bolts out of the gas straps.they will just hang there There will be 2 Rubber Hoses: the filler hose and the breather hose, you will need to take off.be prepared for gas from the gas lines.get a rag to push into the filler hose hole. You may need to remove the bolts by the gas cap to help get the gas tank down to get to the filler hose. You should lower the gas tank just enough to get the smaller gas lines on top of the tank, once there off ,you can finish lowering. There will be a metal ring on top of the tank with maybe three teeth sticking up.you will need a punch and a hammer,or something to hit it with to spin the ring around.once the ring is out when you pull the pump out there will be a rubber ring, make sure its ok.be careful when pulling out the pump assembly.once you replace the pump..then just do everything in reverse.
you will have to lower the gas tank out of the car to replace the fuel pump as it's in the tank.

  • Is the fuel pump on a Toyota 22 r-e pickup supposed to only run when the starter is cranking?

I have changed the fuel pump and checked that there is fire going into injectors. I have also changed plugs, wires and fuses and it will run when gas is poured into carbuerator but truck still won't start. Any ideas?
Is the fuel pump on a Toyota 22 r-e pickup supposed to only run when the starter is cranking?
First of all, 22RE is fuel injected. 22R is carbed. Which one do you have??? If it is EFI (22RE), the fuel pump will only turn on for a few seconds when the key is turned on, then when you crank it and it starts it will stay running. Keep in mind, the fuel pump will NOT turn on if there is never adequate oil pressure, so also check your oil level.

If it is carbed (22R), the fuel pump only runs when the engine is spinning at any speed because it is run by the motor.

    Hope this helps.
Is the fuel pump on a Toyota 22 r-e pickup supposed to only run when the starter is cranking?
    No....

The fuel pump runs all the time. It's what transfers fuel to your engine. So if it's off, no fuel is going anywhere.
I mostly agree with nn2004. I would however check the plugs to see if they're getting wet. Did you change the fuel pump yourself? When you turn the key on, you should have a buddy listening for the fuel pump and see if they can hear the pump running for a few seconds. Then it will shut off. You might have left out a step if this isn't happening/

Would a bad fuel pump relay cause car to stall?

TAzoday i decided to try swaping fuel pump relay and car seems fine but i dont know yet. Just crious would a faulty relay cause these stalling problem i thought relay was just to start the pump to start car?
Would a bad fuel pump relay cause car to stall?
    It's one possible cause.

The relay switches power to the pump. If it is not allowing power to get to the pump or does it does so intermittantly, you car may stall.

    Don
Would a bad fuel pump relay cause car to stall?
    Yes.
a faulty relays will stop 'relaying' electric to the fuel pump.
It is very possible, but your key thing to watch is the relay you swapped it for, if you swapped it for an AC relay, see how your AC works. Hope you didn't swap it for a cooling fan relay.
Yes it can,the relay gives powr to the fuel pump once the key is turned on ,the relay could be getting hot causing it to lose contact, which will stop power from going to the fuel pump.

if your car still runs a little try to get the tank empty or try to syphon some gas out first. This way you don't have to get really high and covered in fuel. Then ......

Relieve the Fuel System Pressure .

best way to do this is disconnect the fuel pump relay and/or fuse and run the car till it stops. Or if you have a fitting on the fuel rail take a screwdriver and push the pin in.( watch out though because fuel will spray out. I usually put a rag over the screwdriver. WITH THE CAR OFF.) But then again if you are replacing your fuel pump you probably don't have any pressure.......

Remove the two rear seat cushion bolts.

Fold the rear seat back cover and cushion forward.

pull the rear seat cushion and cover out from under the rear seat back cover and cushion and remove the rear seat cushion and cover

Remove three luggage compartment floor cover hold-down pins and fold the luggage compartment floor cover forward until the fuel pump assembly access plate is visible.

Remove the four fuel pump access plate screws, the ground lead, and the fuel pump assembly access plate

Disconnect the fuel pump assembly electrical connector.

if you got a 4 door- remove the fuel vapor tube shutoff valve bolt and the evaporative emission tube shut off valve from the bracket on the fuel pump assembly housing.

Loosen the two hose clamps and disconnect the two fuel pump hoses from the fuel pump hose fittings on the fuel pump assembly housing.

Remove the screws and lift the fuel pump assembly housing out

Disconnect the fuel level sensor electrical connector.

Remove the two fuel level sensor washers and fuel level sensor nuts and the fuel level sensor.

    Remove the fuel level sensor.

Remove the fuel pump screw, fuel pump grommet and the fuel pump bracket from the bottom of the fuel pump

Remove the fuel tank sender filter bracket, fuel tank sender filter and the fuel tank sender filter retainer from the fuel pump.

Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.

Remove the clamp and the fuel pump from the fuel pump assembly housing.

DO the reverse off this to put it back in. I am a certified ford tech and i tried to write some of this from the manual. Basiccally it's not that hard. Just take the seat out and then unbolt the cover from the tank and then take off the fuel hoses. Then take the pump assembly out. Then just dissconect everything to get the stupid pump out.

It should take about an 1hr to 2hrs depending on your shill level. But you might want to budget more time because it freakin cold outside. Just take your time so you don't mess anything up. Good luck!
How to change fuel pump 94 ford aspire?
So just to get this correct it is as simple as getting the back seat out and then working the fuel pump out? you say your a certified ford tech, so how long should this take? i will be doing this in a driveway and its about -10 F in the mornings and that is when i will be doing it. So if i could get an estimate on time this will take that would be greatly appreciated.

What happens if you change your fuel pump on your car without changing the fuel filter?

had a mechanic replace the fuel pump on my chevy van because the engine would crank but not turn over. car ran fine for a week then same problem, crank but no turn over. brought it back to him and he said it started right up. drove it for a week then same problem, crank but no start. brought it back to him this third time, and he replaced the neutral safety switch. car ran for about a week then same problem, crank but no start. by this time, i figure he's ripping me off or doesn't know what he's doing. i decide to take to another shop and they tell me its bad fuel pump, the very same problem first shop was supposed to fix. gave this new shop permission to replace pump again (if it was ever replaced the first time). this shop told me that the first shop never even replaced the fuel filter. even if the first shop had replaced the fuel pump, by not replacing the filter at the same time, could this have been the cause of my vehicle continually breaking down?

The fuel filter doesn't usually plug up completely all at once. The sign of a dirty fuel filter is lack of power or cannot maintain highway speeds. The engine will usually start with a dirty fuel filter because there is enough gas getting through to start the engine.

It could just be the fuel filter relay. My nephew had this same problem. It appeared as if the fuel pump was not working but before changing the pump we checked the relay. A new relay is about $20 and you can get a used one at a scrap yard.

not changing a fuel filter when u changed the fuel pump is like taking a shower and putting on the same dirty clothes feels good for the moment then u start to smell sooner than later
    pluasably very likely

sometimes it happens that a new pump will only last a short time.

aftermarket electric pumps of the less expensive grade are a bit notorious for it but always want new filter AND SOCK... with a new pump
I would be looking at the coil or the ignition. The ignition has contacts in it if they are not operating right it could well be it but also have the coil checked out.I don't think the problem your having is the fuel system. Also replace your ignition module in the distributor that could be also related to the problem of it not starting.Because all of what your saying I believe is in the ignition system and not the fuel system. The next time it doesn't start check to see if you have spark at the plugs by pulling one of them and hook up a spark tester you can get at a parts store will have them.Place the spark tester on the spark plug wire and watch for a spark but have someone else turn the ignition to the start position and crank it.If no spark your problem is in the ignition primary side which is the coil or the ignition module in the distributor if you have the coil in the cap type of ignition. If you have any other questions email me at hgm20002000@yahoo.com

Is it hard to change fuel pump on 03 for exployer sport?
Get a Chilton or Hayes manual and read up on it see what your getting your self into, If you are mechanically inclined should not be to hard will need a friend to help you lower the tank make sure its empty, you also will need some special tools for the fuel lines nothing to expense few dollars at auto zone.

The toughest part can be simply getting the fuel lines apart - you will need special adapters to release them and they can be very stubborn sometimes.

Otherwise, make sure that you do it with the tank near empty - once the tank is on the ground, it's not too difficult.

Expect to spend some time freeing up old rusted and stuck bolts and retainers.
OK..gas weighs I forgot how much but lets say about 6 pounds per gallon (as water I believe is 7) ... half a tank is about 50 pounds of sloshing weight.. add to that the special tools to pull the fuel lines off , and on some they bolt on, on some it requires a special wrench to remove the ring

Logically it seems easy.. someone who's been there and done that.. it takes two people, removal of the driveshaft ,and a good jack able to support the tank (nothing at sears will do... will need a transmission jack or better if filled about 1/4 tank)
